H-4 visa:

The H-4 visa is available for spouses of H-1B visa holders. The H-4 visa does not allow the visa holder to work. The H-4 visa can be converted to an H-1B or F-1 but there are many obstacles such as onerous requirements of the H-1B and the high cost of education in the US . This results in many spouses who were working and successful in their country being stuck at home in the US .  

L-2 visa:

The L-2 visa is available for spouses of L-1 visa holders. It is generally lawful for an L-2 visa holder to accept gainful employment.

F-2 visa:

The F-2 visa is available for spouses of F-1 visa holders. The F-2 visa does not allow the visa holder to work but can be converted to an employment visa. The F-2 visa holder may engage in full or part time study. However, Family members, on F-2s, may not attend school without c/s to F-1, except that a child may attend elementary through 12th grade. F-2s may not attend school while the c/s is pending.
