Following the Obama lead healthcare reform in the United States, the next item on his agenda should be immigration reform. Recent legislation in Arizona may help hasten Federal immigration reform.

The most controversial part of the newly enacted Arizona law is that a law enforcement officer, without a warrant, may arrest a person if the officer has probable cause to believe that person has committed any public offense that makes the person removable from the United States. This means that police officers may stop suspected illegal immigrants and demand proof of citizenship. The Arizona government’s position is that the law simply regulates immigration the same way that federal law and federal authorities currently regulate. Under Federal law, immigrants must carry their green card at all times.

The Arizona law basically will allow Arizona police officers to stop Hispanic people and require them to present proof of citizenship. The law has drawn threats of US and Mexico boycotts and should soon be challenged on US Constitutional grounds.
